The Vandy Van Safety Officer is part of the Public Safety Department at Vanderbilt University and is a key individual contributor responsible for providing transportation of students, visitors, campus pedestrians as required throughout the campus. This position reports suspicious or hazardous situations, provides general security and patrol and performs proactive patrols on foot. The Vandy Van Safety Officer may utilize only non-police vehicles, may staff security posts and will enforce parking regulations.

This role will have daily contact with members of the university community to include students, parents, staff, faculty, physicians and visitors to give information/directions, take reports, and provide assistance. This role will also have frequent contact with other Community Service Officers and Police Officers as well as university staff members to assist with complaints and other tasks as needed. This role will occasional have contact with members of local, state and federal law enforcement agencies to exchange information, provide assistance, or request assistance as necessary.

Duties andResponsibilities

Transport of Passengers

  • Providesafe and proper transport of passengers in concert with VU safety guidelinesand policies.

  • Obeyall local, state, and federal laws regarding proper operation of shuttlevehicles.

  • Maintaina thorough knowledge of all routes to include Vanderbilt garages, majorstreets, landmarks, etc.

  • Maintainvehicles according to defined standards (inspections, cleaning, fueling, andlogging of transports).

  • Reportaccidents, observed or suspected violations of Vanderbilt policies, safetyhazards and/or unusual incidents to Manager.

  • Providecustomer service as required and assist disabled passengers when necessary.

Patrol/Stationary Post

  • Maybe assigned to a fixed security post and will perform specific tasks andassignments defined for the post.

  • May be assigned to traffic mitigation,and/or parking enforcement.

  • May be assigned to proactive patrols offacilities, grounds, parking lots and garages to check for safety andsecurity hazards. Enforces firelane loading and handicap parking including towing vehicles as necessary.

  • May lock and unlock facilities or areas.

  • May be assigned to monitor nonviolentpsychiatric patients.

Community Oriented Policing

  • May serve the community throughproactive security post assignments or patrol functions includingself-initiated activities.

  • Develop rapport with members ofthe university community as well as surrounding areas; participates incommunity relations activities.

  • Assist community members asnecessary.

Calls for Service

  • May respond to non-policeemergency calls to include but not be limited to the following: alarms(fire, general security), hazardous material spills and leaks, andpedestrian or vehicular traffic control.

  • May be required to assist incontrolling, de-escalating, or restraining combative and/or violentpatients as requested by medical personnel.

  • May provide back-up andassistance for other officers within guidelines specified in departmentpolicy and procedures

  • May respond to general securityor safety hazard calls for service as directed and maintains familiaritywith personal protective equipment including protective suits and N-95respirators.

  • Maintain knowledge of theInstitutional Disaster Plan.

  • May provide appropriate internaland external disaster assistance according to Departmental, University,and Medical Center policies and procedures.

  • May provide walking escorts asnecessary.

Investigation

  • May be assigned to investigate andwrite reports for non-criminal activities according to established procedures.

Special Events and Assignments

  • May provide security for events such asathletic, concerts, speakers, visiting dignitaries, commencement andnumerous other social activities where personnel may be required toprovide crowd control and maintain order.

  • Mayassist with annual parking permit registration.

Profile of anIdeal Candidate

Vandy Van Officers must be able to:

  • Stand for long periodsof time

  • Walk, climb, and lift

  • Meet writtendepartmental standards on appearance/grooming

  • Pass a thoroughbackground investigation that demonstrates –

  • he/she is of good moral character,

  • he/she has a good driving record, and

  • that he/she has no prior criminal convictions that would prohibit theindividual from meeting the standards set forth by the State of Tennessee tobecome certified under the Private Protective Services Act

  • Pass a drug test; must obtain immunizations and medicaltests as required to be able to work in patient care and high risk areas

  • Pass a PsychologicalEvaluation

  • High School Education orG.E.D.

  • Six months previouscommercial driving experience preferred

  • Must have a validdriver’s license in the State of Tennessee or be eligible to obtain oneand do so within 60 days of appointment.

  • Must have a TennesseeCommercial Driver’s license - PEndorsement - or be eligible to obtain oneand do so within 60 days of appointment

(NOTE: Certified CDL License with P Endorsement Current DOT Physical Certificate).

  • Must be at least 18years of age.

  • Must successfullycomplete required training for safety officers.

  • Must obtain andmaintain Private Protective Services Act certification.

  • May complete PressurePoint Control Tactics, Asp Baton, pepper spray, or similar training.

  • Good customer serviceskills

  • Demonstrated effectivewritten and oral communication skills

  • Demonstratedself-restraint in challenging and/or difficult situations

  • Ability to operatecomputerized equipment and a two-way radio

  • Ability to work in amulti-cultural setting

  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills
