Vanderbilt University Software Engineer, Institute of Chemical Biology in Nashville, Tennessee

The Software Engineer is part of the Institute of Chemical Biology at Vanderbilt University and will be responsible for the maintenance and development of software for compound library management and data storage and analysis. The ideal candidate will be able to independently develop software and communicate with chemistry and biology researchers to adapt the software to their needs. Reporting directly to the High-Throughput Screening (HTS) facility director, the programmer will work with HTS staff to meet their software needs by maintaining software, responding to ticket requests, adding functionality, and modernizing the software.

The Vanderbilt Institute of Chemical Biology (VICB) is a multi- and trans-disciplinary institute within the Basic Sciences of the Vanderbilt School of Medicine. Founded in 2002, the VICB's stated mission was to "establish research and education programs in the application of chemical technologies to important biological problems". The VICB provides a vibrant interdisciplinary environment that fosters new discovery and research innovation at Vanderbilt. It will be critical to the future exploration of new dimensions for successful multi-investigator initiatives and the ongoing integration of chemical biology education and research into disease-focused programs across the Vanderbilt campus.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain current HTS associated software programs, a web application written in Javascript and supported by a graphical workflow backend, pipeline pilot, and an Oracle database and respond quickly to tickets from HTS users reporting bugs or other critical issues.

  • Manage hardware-software integration enabling data analysis pipelines to HTS software to meet the evolving needs of HTS staff and Vanderbilt researchers that use HTS facilities and to ensure software compatibility with new HTS equipment.

  • Keep software up to date with modern software development standards and practices and write software documentation to ensure longevity.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, data science, chemistry or equivalent field is strongly preferred.

  • Experience with software development in Javascript is necessary.

  • Experience working with relational databases (e.g. SQL and Oracle) is necessary.

  • Knowledge of chemistry and cheminformatics is preferred.

  • Experience using collaborative development tools such as SVN, Git, and JIRA is preferred.

  • Experience with modern web application development libraries and frameworks (e.g. React, Angular) is preferred.

  • Experience with programming with graphical workflows is preferred.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with HTS staff and users is necessary.

  • To collaborate with HTS users applying virtual screens.
