Vanderbilt University Simulation Lab Nurse-Temporary, Part-time in Nashville, Tennessee

The Simulation Lab Nurse joins an experienced simulation team in a collaborative, supportive environment. Organizational planning and process skills are important in this position as appropriate preparation and simulation delivery are essential to the delivery of a successful simulation. Knowledge of the standards of best practice used in the Simulation Lab is also an important aspect of the job. This part-time position spans roughly 14 weeks at 8 hours per week and is dedicated to supporting the experiential learning needs of the pre-licensure nursing program.

About the Work Unit:

The position lies in VUSN- Academic Affairs in the Division of VUSN Innovation and Curriculum Affairs.

VUSN supports the development of innovative academic educational programs within the School that align strategically with other Vanderbilt University initiatives and that address national priorities to promote/protect health and play a vital role in providing access to health care for people everywhere.

Key Functions and Expected Performance:

  • Assesses needs for successful simulation experiences

  • Troubleshoots equipment and contacts appropriate resources as necessary

  • Collaborates to identify the most current educational needs

  • Partners with faculty in developing case scenarios and/or skills labs

  • Serves as a resource for staff, educators, and students in utilizing the labs and equipment

  • Plans resources needed for successful simulation experiences

  • Reviews/updates/revises calendar of events

  • Balances variables (lab space, personnel, and equipment) to fulfill needs

  • Maintains inventory, reorders, restocks, and disposes of supplies necessary for lab sessions

  • Communicates needs to team including purchases, scheduling, training, tours, and equipment repair

  • Establishes methods and standards for ongoing utilization and maintenance and operation of the labs

  • Implements requested resources to deliver positive simulations

  • Assists with set-up, maintenance, and break-down of rooms and equipment (simulators, task trainers, and other equipment/props, etc.) for lab sessions

  • Sets the scene using moulage make-up and props based on scenario needs

  • Operates and programs patient simulators, audio/visual equipment, and computer software for simulation sessions

  • Creates and maintains a safe lab environment and functions with an awareness of safety at all times

  • Assures proper utilization of equipment, supplies, services, and materials in a cost-effective manner

  • Processes work orders, troubleshoots, and coordinates repairs and inspection of equipment

  • Evaluates simulation experiences for quality improvement purposes

  • Identifies improvement opportunities

  • Reviews outcome measures and assists in planning improved use of resources

  • Promotes International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL) Standards of Best Practice in execution of learning opportunities

  • Maintains simulation equipment so that resources will be in working order for future simulation activities

  • Enforces proper usage and operation of equipment and provides technical assistance as needed

  • Performs routine and preventative maintenance on trainers/manikins

  • Reorders and restocks supply inventory

  • Recycles/repurposes/surpluses old equipment

  • Identifies personal development activities that will enhance job performance

  • Participates in growth opportunities to enhance skill set and maintain professional credentials

  • Complies with organizational and hospital standards and policies

  • Consistently utilizes nursing and departmental policies and procedures to guide practice of self and others

Supervisory Relationships:

This position does not have supervisory responsibility. This position reports administratively and functionally to the Skills and Simulation Lab Director.

Education and Certifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing is required.

  • Unencumbered Registered Nurse licensure in the state of Tennessee is required.

  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification is strongly preferred.

  • Certification as a Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE) is preferred.

  • At least two years' employment as a registered nurse or nursing experience equivalent is required

  • Experience in healthcare simulation is preferred

  • Experience in program development or evaluation is preferred

  • Familiarity with various techniques used by providers in the clinical settings to perform procedures is preferred

  • Proficiency in utilizing computer software is preferred
