Vanderbilt University Research Field Collector, Department of Teaching and Learning (Part-Time) in Nashville, Tennessee

Research Field Collector, Department of Teaching and Learning (Part-Time) (Job Number: 2001065)


Under moderate supervision, you will assess the math and self-regulatory skills of children and conduct semi-structured interview sessions with students in 10th – 11th grades. The position may require travel to and/or virtual communication with schools in Nashville and surrounding areas. The work is temporary and hours are irregular, depending on the assessment schedule, which is based primarily on the school schedules.

Formal virtual training to learn the use of tablet hardware and software plus multiple measures for assessment will begin in January 2021. You must be able to attend up to 3 days of formal training followed by an intense practice and certification process. Virtual and/or in-person assessments begin in February of 2021 and last through May of 2021.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Participate in virtual training to learn assessment tools and procedures and complete certification process for assessment. Continued employment is dependent on successfully completing the process to become certified to administer the assessment battery.

  • Participate in training to learn interview protocols.

  • Conduct virtual and/or in-person individual assessments and interviews with 16-18 year-old students, using tablets and assessment software while following a specified assessment protocol.

  • Communicate politely and professionally with teachers, principals, and other school staff.

  • Be able to function relatively independently within a varied and flexible schedule with multiple tasks to perform, with a high level of attention to detail.

  • Have a valid driver’s license and car, or other reliable transportation, in order to visit schools for assessments. (Insurance required.)

  • Participate in a background check to meet Vanderbilt University requirements for working with children.

  • Become certified by Vanderbilt’s Institutional Review Board, a committee that protects the rights of human participants in research studies.

  • Bachelor’s degree is necessary, but a Master’s degree is preferred.

  • Experience in education, research, or administration is preferred.

  • Previous experience with child assessment is a plus; math knowledge/skills are also a plus, but not required.
