The Research Assistant II is involved in analyzing the pharmacological activity of compounds developed within the Vanderbilt Center for Neuroscience Drug Discovery (VCNDD). The principal function of this position is to provide support for ongoing research efforts related to neurological and psychiatric diseases. This position reports directly to the Principal Investigator.

Aboutthe Work Unit:

The Pharmacology team within the

VCNDD supports assay development, high-throughput screening, detailed in vitro pharmacological analysis of ligands, as well as in vivo evaluation of pharmacokinetic and behavioral pharmacology properties with the goal of developing therapeutics, specifically for central nervous system disorders. Successful candidates for this position will interface with members among all areas of the VCNDD, including those in molecular pharmacology, chemistry, in vitro and in vivo drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics, and in vivo pharmacology.

KeyFunctions and Expected Performance:

§ Under supervision, assists with in vivo evaluation of pharmacokinetic and behavioral effects of VCNDD-developed compounds in rodents, and maintain and genotype mouse colonies

§ Maintains, troubleshoots, and optimizes efforts to improve laboratory equipment use and automation.

§ Assists with instrumentation needs

§ Analyzes results using computer-aided data analysis software

§ Maintains accurate databases and experimental notebooks of results

§ Communicates results in a timely fashion to an integrated team of multidisciplinary scientists

§ Assists with general laboratory operation and inventory


This position does not have supervisory responsibility; this position reports to the Principal Investigator

Educationand Certifications:

§ A Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry or a related field of study from an accredited institution of higher education is necessary

Experienceand Skills:

§ At least one-two years of laboratory experience is strongly preferred

§ Previous scientific work with rodents is strongly preferred

§ Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs, particularly Microsoft Excel, are strongly preferred, as are basic computer programming skills

§ Excellent organizational, oral, and written communication skills are necessary

§ Attention to detail is necessary

§ Team player is necessary
