Vanderbilt University Research Assistant, Pharmacology in Nashville, Tennessee

The Research Assistant position provides support for ongoing research efforts in the Department of Pharmacology. The individual hired for this position will be involved in investigating the therapeutic potential of novel pharmacological compounds for the treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders using cutting-edge technology including ex vivo electrophysiology in combination with optogenetics, in vivo fiber photometry and behavioral pharmacology in rodents.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist with experiments, including ex vivo experiments, in vivo imaging, immunohistochemistry, perfusions, and behavioral pharmacology

  • Analyze experimental results using computer-aided data analysis software

  • Maintains accurate databases and experimental notebooks of results

  • Communicates results in a timely fashion

  • Maintain and genotype mouse colonies

  • Prepare buffers and reagents

  • Assist with general laboratory operation and inventory

  • Present progress in lab meetings monthly

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree in neuroscience, biology, chemistry or a related field of study from an accredited institution of higher education is necessary

  • At least one year of laboratory experience is strongly preferred

  • Previous scientific work with rodents is strongly preferred

  • Attention to detail is necessary and work with minimal supervision

  • Self-motivation with a strong sense of personal responsibility and accountability is necessary

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs, particularly Microsoft Excel, are strongly preferred, as are basic computer programming skills

  • Strong organizational, oral, and written communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of lab members are necessary
