Research Assistant II, Pharmacology (Job Number: 2001043)
The Research Assistant II is part of the Department of Pharmacology at Vanderbilt University and is a key individual contributor responsible for basic laboratory duties including preparation of reagents/buffers and general laboratory organization. This position will also assist other laboratory personnel performing standard laboratory techniques. Reporting will be directly to the Principal Investigator
The Department of Pharmacology is seeking a Research Assistant I to assist Dr. Professor Spiller in his laboratory. The Spiller lab is a structural biology lab focused on infectious disease and the host’s immune response. The successful applicant will work as a team member to assist Dr. Spiller with protein expression and purification. The candidate will be expected to interact professionally with other lab members. Preference will be given to applicants with experience in some of the following responsibilities.
Duties and responsibilities
The purpose of this position is to provide support for a research laboratory. The Research Assistant I will work closely with the Principal Investigator to maintain organization and efficient functioning of the laboratory.
Design and create new protein constructs
Optimize protein expression of new protein constructs
Design and carry out experiments on the basis of discussed plans with Principal Investigator
Analyze chromatography experiments
Design and carry out crystallization trials following discussions with the Principal Investigator or other lab members
Respond to problems with major items of equipment within the la
Monitor performance of major equipment
Order parts and fix equipment if necessary
Contact outside service representatives and coordinate repairs when in-house repairs are not possible
Maintain inventory of required chemicals and other reagents
Identify commercial suppliers for new reagents
Place and track orders for lab
Reconcile orders as needed
Follow University safety protocols
Perform some dishwashing and autoclaving
Bachelor’s degree (or anticipated degree this year) in Biochemistry, Chemistry or related field
Excellent organization and communication skills.
Highly motivated and goal-oriented.
