Position Summary :

The Vanderbilt University Credit Union (VUCU) offers an exceptional opportunity for a dynamic and experienced leader to join our credit union in the role of President. Collaborating with the Board of Directors, the management team and staff, this executive is responsible for achieving the overall goals and objectives included in the strategic plan, maintaining the credit union’s financial health and stability and for ensuring conformance with applicable State and Federal laws. The President will oversee and direct the day-to-day operations as well as the ability to grow the credit union and achieve the mission, vision and values of the credit union. The ideal candidate will have the vision, leadership and communication skills to help the credit union prosper.

The Credit Union President will require considerable degree of initiative, judgment, and discretion when handling members' accounts, processing applicable transactions, and ensures consistent application of rules and policies when interacting with members, agencies, and other parties as necessary.

About the Work Unit :

VUCU is a not-for-profit cooperative organization established in 1959 to promote saving, provide financial services and serve as a source of credit at a reasonable rate of interest. The Credit Union is member-owned, member-operated and democratically governed. Credit Union membership is open to all full-time and regular part-time Vanderbilt University employees; family members and all employees of Vanderbilt affiliated organizations. VUCU is an independent entity and it’s employees are “leased” from Vanderbilt and therefore receive all benefits offered to Vanderbilt University employees.

The VUCU President will be responsible for overseeing 7-9 employees; directing, motivating and developing a competent, high performing staff to assure maximum efficiency in the daily credit union operations and effective member relations.

Key Functions andResponsibilities:

  • The new President ofVanderbilt Credit Union is expected to have a strong emphasis on growth,expanding the reach within the Vanderbilt community and increasingawareness for the opportunities the credit union creates for Vanderbiltfaculty and students.

  • Directs, motivates anddevelops a competent, high performing staff to assure maximum efficiencyin the daily credit union operations and effective member relations.

  • Prepare reportsfor the board of directors on the business affairs and financialcondition of the credit union

  • Develops andimplements a strategic plan including goal setting through actionplanning

  • Manage theday-to-day activities of the credit union and establish office,operation, lending, collections and human resources procedures to usestaff and facilities efficiently’

  • Oversee theadequacy and soundness of the credit union’s financial structure

  • Review operatingresults of the organization, compare them to established objectives andtake steps to ensure that appropriate measures are taken to correctunsatisfactory results

  • Supports ongoingdevelopment of a positive environment and culture that allows the creditunion to fulfill our mission

  • Responsible forthe hiring, compensation and termination of credit union staff

  • Represent thecredit union with members, the financial community and the public

  • Evaluateperformance of executives for compliance with established policies andobjectives of the credit union and contributions in attaining objectives

Supervisory Relationships :

This position does have supervisory responsibility over all employed by VUCU; this position reports administratively and functionally to the VUCU Board of Directors.

Education andCertifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree with seven to ten years of senior management experience in a financial institution overseeing other employees is required.

Experience and Skills :

  • Excellent understanding of both for-profit and non-profit accounting and business models.

  • Strong knowledge of macroeconomic conditions, and the key financial instruments in the social finance, impact investing, and philanthropic fields.

  • Strong technical understanding of banking terms, commercial lending, debt/equity structures, credit, underwriting, loan operations, portfolio management, and investment programs.

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills to effectively interact with staff, clients and prospects, and strategic partners. Ability to communicate complex subject matter in easily understood terms.

  • Work well under pressure, demonstrating a culture of accountability in meeting goals.

  • Strong leader, mentor, and facilitator who thrives in a team-oriented collaborative atmosphere.

  • 5+ years of senior management experience in credit union is preferred.
