Vanderbilt University Pest Control Specialist in Nashville, Tennessee

Position Summary:

The Pest Control Specialist is part of the Plant Operations services at Vanderbilt University and is a key individual contributor responsible for using appropriate discretion and special knowledge of pests and pest control techniques to preserve the heath and property of the university. The role of this position is to take a lead in the organization and execution of inspections, treatments, and documentation within an integrated pest management system in all campus buildings. Reporting directly to the shop Manager, the Pest Control Specialist works closely with the entire Vanderbilt University community on a daily basis.

Plant Operations provides facilities support for all construction, renovation, and routine maintenance of University Central space and facilities; housekeeping services for approximately 5.8 million square feet of academic, administrative, residential, and recreational space; grounds care for 330 acres that are a registered arboretum; turf care for athletic fields; and utilities for the University Central and the Medical Center.

Key Functions and Expected Performance:

  • Maintain all treatment and pesticide use records as detailed by the Department of Agriculture and Plant Operations Pest Control shop

  • Conduct all pest control activities within the frame work of established treatment protocols established by Plant Operations

  • Follow all EPA and other Government / University guidelines and requirements with the use, storage, transportation and disposal of pesticides, application equipment, containers, etc.

  • Have the necessary knowledge to contain any spills or accidental contamination which possibly could occur.

  • Communicate all treatment activities with the shop manager daily and with other members of the shop to facilitate service continuity and effectiveness.

  • Daily time keeping and reporting in work management system.

  • Dismantle and reassemble equipment when necessary to access a pest harborage area and facilitate treatments, caulk holes and cracks, open access panels, install pest control devices, etc.

  • Perform regular physical effort: lift items in excess of 50 lbs., bend, squat, stoop, climb and work off ladders, etc.

  • Must be able to use, calibrate, trouble shoot and repair in the field all application equipment or render it inert for transportation

  • Knowledge and experience necessary to identify, treat, control and eliminate both invertebrate and vertebrate pests encountered in industrial, institutional, and structural pest control.

  • Use common hand tools and power tools necessary to provide treatment and certain chemical applications such as hammer drills, hand drills, power sprayers (electric and gasoline)

  • Must follow the rules and regulations associated with the TN Department of Agriculture

  • Other duties related to classification

Supervisory Relationships:

This position does have supervisory responsibility: this position reports administratively and functionally to Assistant Director – Operations.

Education and Certifications:

  • High School diploma or GED is required.

  • Valid TN driver’s licenses is required.

Experience and Skills:

  • 3 years directly related and verifiable experience is necessary.

  • General Pest and Rodent Control license issued by the Tennessee Department of Agriculture is Required.

  • Nuisance Wildlife Damage Control Permit from the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency is Preferred.

  • 07 - Industrial, Institutional, Structural, and Health Related Pest Control Certification by the Tennessee Department of Agriculture is preferred .
