The Personal Trainer is responsible for delivering personalized exercise programs to patrons of the Vanderbilt University Recreation and Wellness center. The position is directly responsible for developing client relations, scheduling appointments and providing quality fitness programs. Personal Trainers will assess current fitness levels, customize workouts, and motivate clients to attain their fitness goals. This position reports to the Assistant Director of Fitness and Wellness Programs.

Duties and responsibilities

Program Activities

  1. Conduct fitnessconsultations and assessments to ensure the client’s goals are clearlyunderstood and recorded

  2. Providecustomized exercise programs that meet the needs and goals of each client

  3. Arrange clientappointments and maintain weekly schedule

  4. Ensure the safetyof participants by creating workouts that follow the recommended exerciseguidelines

  5. Motivate andtrain clients either one-on-one or in a small group of 2-3 people

  6. Track, monitor,and report each client’s progress and commitment to an ongoing trainingprogram

  7. Teach and educateclients on proper exercise form and techniques

  8. Assist with thepromotion of the personal training program

  9. Act as a liaisonfor the Vanderbilt Recreation and Wellness Center with University andcommunity patrons


  10. Know and abide byUniversity and Rec risk management policies and procedures

  11. Stay current withfitness trends and programs and have the desire to continually learn newprinciples in the areas of personal training, and overall health andwellness

  12. Attend allmandatory Rec meetings and training sessions

  13. Other duties asassigned

Hours: This position non-exempt and has a part time flex schedule and is expected to work when there is a demand for services. It could include morning, daytime, evening, and weekend hours as needed.

Profile of an Ideal Candidate

  • Bachelor's Degree required

  • Minimum of two ormore years of experience working and training in a fitness facility preferred

  • Current personaltrainer certification from a nationally recognized association (ACE, AFFA,ACSM) is required

  • Current AmericanRed Cross CPR/AED/FA certification or ability to obtain within 30 days ofemployment

  • Must be flexibleand able to adapt easily to changes that occur on short notice

  • Must be able tocommunicate effectively and relate to both staff and patrons

  • Ability to lift 40lbs. and demonstrate exercises and movements to patrons

  • Have the abilityto motivate others to achieve their goals
