Position Summary

Librarian for Outreach and Exhibitions oversees the exhibits program for Vanderbilt’s distributed distinctive collections (Special Collections, TV News Archive, and the History of Medicine Collection). This position will manage all aspects of the exhibitions program from inceptions to installation, working with curators and subject specialists to design a robust schedule for outreach and exhibits using our collections. Spearhead outreach for the Special Collections Library by developing robust programming highlighting university materials.

About the Work Unit

The mission of Special Collections is to preserve, store, and provide access to Vanderbilt University's impressive collection of rare books, manuscripts, photographs, memorabilia, and institutional archives. Special Collections supplies primary resource material to a variety of local, national, and international scholars each year. It houses one of the finest twentieth-century Southern literature collections in the United States and is the center for the study of the Fugitive and Agrarian literary groups. Other popular subjects include Southern history and culture, women's issues, civil rights, religious studies, performing arts, and Latin American history, especially Colombian and Afro-Colombian history.

Duties and Responsibilities

Oversees the exhibit program for distinctive collections

  • Coordinates the schedule for a variety of exhibitactivities in the libraries, including documentation, design, installation, andde-installation.

  • Coordinates 4 exhibits a year, and up to eight pop-upexhibits.

  • Collaborates with curators, librarians, and others onphysical and digital exhibits.

  • Works with the library’s preservation librarian to identifyobjects too fragile for exhibition.

  • Coordinates with the Office of Assessment, Communications,and Engagement on publicity for physical and digital exhibits.

Serves as the Outreach Librarian for Special Collections

  • Conducts tours and makes presentations on topics ofexhibits.

  • Collaborates with faculty to teach with primary sourcematerials.

  • Works with local and regional peers on thematicexhibitions.

  • Plans events for Special Collections (example: Curator’sTalks).

  • Assists with public services in Special Collections asneeded.

Research and development

  • Researches, presents, and publishes about new forms ofphysical and digital curation.

  • Serves on and present regularly to the library’s Collegiumof Curators.

Profile of an Ideal Candidate

  • ALA-accredited MLS degree or its equivalent is necessary.

  • Prior employment in a library or cultural resourceinstitution is necessary.

  • At least one year of experience in creating and installingexhibits is necessary.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills arenecessary.

  • Ability to work independently and to participate ingroup/team endeavors is necessary.

  • Working knowledge of WordPress, Omeka, Photoshop and Scalaris necessary.

  • Knowledge of at least one foreign language, preferablySpanish, Latin, German, or French is preferred.

  • At least one year of special collections library experienceis preferred.

  • Prior experience managing a department fund or budget ispreferred.

  • Supervisory experience is preferred.

  • Project management experience is preferred.

  • Graduate degree in History, English, Latin American Studiesor other subject specialty is preferred.
