The Director works with the Vice Provost for Research at Vanderbilt University and is a key manager responsible for supporting the Vice Provost in overseeing research operations and administration. The position oversees, in conjunction with the Vice Provost, research administration across campus centers and units and enhancing the research experience for research professionals. The position interacts with faculty, staff, and external entities on a regular basis.
The Director coordinates with other Vanderbilt University offices to lead research compliance and support financial planning for the Office of the Vice Provost for Research.
The role of the office has been expanded from its past definition based on faculty feedback. In addition to overseeing the university’s research portfolio, the Vice Provost for Research also oversees implementation of the university’s new future vision and trans-institutional strategies and works closely with the Provost, academic Deans, the Vice Provosts, and the faculty at large to advance the quality of the research and scholarship university-wide. Our plans include developing strategies to enhance extramural support for research and advanced studies from all sources – corporate, foundation, federal, and philanthropic, advancing a cohesive and vibrant international research agenda, and seeking key partnerships around shared priorities research. The Vice Provost works with the Vanderbilt University Research Council in advocating for the research and scholarship missions of all disciplines at Vanderbilt.
This position has supervisory responsibility over designated staff; the position reports functionally and administratively to the Vice Provost for Research.

Coordinateswith the Director of Sponsored Projects Administration (SPA) and theDirector of Research Administration Systems and Reporting to ensurebusiness continuity
Suggests anddevelops model agreements for facilitating industry sponsored agreements
Monitorsdevelopments in federal regulatory requirements and coordinates Vanderbiltresponse
Continues toimprove and streamline Vanderbilt University and Vanderbilt UniversityMedical Center research collaborations
Directs administration of trans-institutional research centers andinstitutes
Establishesuniform administrative processes across research centers and institutes
Overseesresearch administration staffing, development, and training for researchcenters and institutes
Providesresearch center and institute budget planning
Performs as a leader in research compliance
Maintainsexpertise in regulatory compliance
Improvessupport for chemical, lab, and laser safety university-wide
OverseesVanderbilt’s plan to reinstate our non-possessing facility clearancestatus
Serves as theFacility Security Officer
Coordinates with other VU offices:
Providesbusiness continuity support within OVPR by working closely with theDirector of SPA and the Director of Research Administration Systems andReporting
Works withOCGA on oversight of Core Ordering & Reporting Enterprise System(CORES) including annual rate setting
Coordinateswith OCGA on expenditure reporting to external organizations (HigherEducation Research and Development Survey, for example)
Coordinateswith Campus Planning and Construction on issues related to environmentalhealth and safety
Profile ofan Ideal Candidate
A Master’sdegree from an accredited institution of higher education is necessary
A Doctoraldegree from an accredited institution of higher education is strongly preferred
8+ years ofdirectly comparable experience is necessary
Stronginterpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectivelywith a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community is necessary
Knowledge offederal, state, and local regulations governing research compliance is necessary
Knowledge ofcontracting process and associated local, state, federal, and otherregulations is necessary
Knowledge ofgovernment and industry sponsored research and development programs is necessary
Ability todevelop and maintain recordkeeping systems and procedures is preferred
Ability toanalyze and interpret financial data and prepare financial reports,statements and/or projections is preferred
Skill inorganizing resources and establishing priorities is preferred
Skill inexamining and reengineering operations and procedures, formulating policy,and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures is preferred
Ability to useindependent judgment and to manage and impart information to a diverserange of constituencies is preferred
