The Data Science Institute at Vanderbilt is a new trans-institutional research and educational center that was launched with funding from the Data Science Visions TIPs VRA grant. The goals of the institute are to support data-intensive research at Vanderbilt, launch new educational tracks in data science, and connect to government, industry and non-profits. Organizationally, the institute falls under the Office of the Vice Provost for Research.

The inaugural Data Scientists are important members of the team charged with launching the new trans-institutional Data Science Institute being created under the Office of the Provost at Vanderbilt University. These new roles are key research positions that entail working with institute faculty and scientific staff to develop the research and teaching activities of the institute. In addition, positions will have some freedom to pursue their own projects and research interests.

We are hiring threepositions, each of which includes a different level of responsibilities andqualifications. These three positions are:

  • Chief Data Scientist

  • Senior Data Scientist

  • Data Scientist

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Chief Data Scientist will report to the co-Directors of the Institute. The Chief Data Scientist is responsible for leading and staffing teams of data scientists, faculty and students for the purpose of supporting research across Vanderbilt, engaging with Vanderbilt faculty and researchers directly, developing and teaching training modules for the Vanderbilt community, assisting faculty in teaching courses that are part of the new MS program in Data Science and advising MS graduate students in their capstone research projects, and advising undergraduate students with their immersion projects. The Chief Data Scientist will have supervisory responsibility.

The Senior Data Scientist will report to the Chief Data Scientist and will primarily be responsible for: engaging with researchers across campus to promote the research services of the institute, participating in or leading scientific teams that will help Vanderbilt researchers to maximize the potential of their data, exploring possible research partnerships, assisting with the teaching of courses in the MS program in Data Science, designing and teaching training modules for the Vanderbilt community, advising MS graduate students in their capstone research projects, and advising undergraduate students with their immersion projects.

The Data Scientist will report to the Chief Data Scientist and will primarily be responsible for: engaging with researchers across campus to promote the research services of the institute, participating in scientific teams that will help Vanderbilt researchers to maximize the potential of their data, exploring possible research partnerships, assisting with the teaching of courses in the MS program in Data Science, designing and teaching training modules for the Vanderbilt community, advising MS graduate students in their capstone research projects, and advising undergraduate students with their immersion projects..

Ideal candidates for all three positions will have extensive technical expertise in data science, academic or industry experience, and have excellent communication skills. Data Scientists of all seniority levels are encouraged to apply and will be considered.

Profile of an IdealCandidate :

  • MS degree required for the DataScientist position. PhD degree required for the Chief and Senior levelpositions.

  • Experience performing researchin industry or an academic environment is required.

  • Experience with working inteams in the data science industry is preferred.

  • Experience with working in ormanaging (depending on seniority level) teams is preferred.

  • Well-rounded skills in datascience: computer programming (e.g., Python, R), data structures (e.g.,SQL), statistics (e.g., Bayesian modelling), data visualization, arerequired.

  • Ability to problem solve,debug, and troubleshoot while under pressure and time constraints isrequired.

  • Ability to communicateeffectively about technical topics to both experts and non-experts isrequired.

  • Excellent oral and writtencommunication skills are preferred.
