Description

The Creative Consultant is part of the Marketing Solutions team at Vanderbilt University and is an individual contributor responsible for overseeing and facilitating the production of a wide array of creative materials for print and digital materials. This role will create designs and art elements for high-level projects, provide direction and quality control checks to vendors on work produced externally, and update templates for the on-line design template system.

Vanderbilt University Marketing Solutions, a division of University Communications, provides university clients with professional photography, editorial, and graphic design services. Our work helps to brand programs, departments, centers, and institutes by enhancing their visual identity.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design communicationmaterials in a variety of formats.

  • Produce concepts, designs,layouts, and illustrations for a variety of communications materials for print,with particular expertise for producing for digital platforms.

  • Present and produce new andinnovative ideas for utilizing design in the digital space.

  • Edit and refine designs andrelated art and text until a successful product is achieved.

  • Collaborates with projectmanager, clients, and others to discuss ideas, note any alterations, budgetlimitations, deadlines, etc. before beginning production of materials.

  • Works with printers toprepare itemized written estimates for clients including specifications relatedto, design, layout, and cost of project materials including, paper, ink,printing, and other vendor related costs, ensuring that financial resources areeffectively utilized.

  • Report time and work progresswithin the divisional project management tool.

  • Follow all departmentworkflow and procedures for the editing, storage, transfer, and archiving offiles.

  • Initiate and art directphoto shoots to produce art for inclusion in designs.

  • Produce infographics andrelated spot art

  • Adhere to project deadlinesand maintain clear and constant communication with project managers.

  • Color correcting images andprepare art for print or digital applications.

  • Experience designing forvideo and motion graphics capabilities

  • Guide and review workproduced by external vendors.

  • In conjunction with theDirector of Creative Strategy, provide consult to university clients during thestartup phase of a project, offering input and guidance on the creativeapproach and deliverables.

  • Provide quality controlchecks on work received from vendors, ensure technical specifications andproject goals are achieved.

  • Provide pre-press supportand press checks for vendor work.

  • Archive materials and workproduced by vendors.

  • Maintain on-line designtemplate system.

  • Build and maintain designtemplates using Adobe InDesign for on-line design template system.

  • Regularly produce or adaptdesigns for inclusion in the on-line design template system. Respond to clientfeedback and adapt designs as necessary.

Supervisory Relationships:

This position does not have supervisory responsibility. This position reports administratively and functionally to the Director of Creative Strategy.

Profile of an Ideal Candidate

· Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education is necessary.

· Knowledge of pre-press and printing procedures is necessary.

· 2 to 3 years of experience in graphic design, marketing or with an agency is preferred.

· Knowledge of principles and practices of graphic design is strongly preferred.

· Ability to create and produce graphic materials using a range of media, methods, techniques, and equipment is strongly preferred.

· Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing is strongly preferred.

· Knowledge of graphic layout and photographic requirements and procedures is strongly preferred.

· Skills in the utilization of specified computerized graphic design programs is strongly preferred.
