Cook Assistant (Job Number: 1901220)


The Cook Assistant (prep cook) supports the culinary staff in a variety of functions. This position washes and cuts meats and vegetables, prepares a variety of ingredients for cooking, monitors inventory and waste levels, provides service to guests, and maintains the kitchen to ensure that it is sanitized by cleansing areas before and after use and making sure that equipment and knives are clean.

Vanderbilt Campus Dining takes pride in the culinary creations served from our kitchens. Our Dining program is highly decorated, the winner of many prestigious awards in the food service industry, including Best On-Site Food Service Operation in the Nation, Best Food Service Operator, the prestigious Ivy Award, and many more. We have 4 main dining centers, 10 restaurants and cafes, 5 convenience stores, and we employ over 350 employees.

Dutiesand Responsibilities

  • Follow written production sheets and recipes

  • Complete production and waste sheets asassigned

Customer Service:

  • Lead by example and follow customer servicestandards outlined in the employee handbook.

  • Works in a team-driven environment, takesdirection, delegates tasks and assists with problem-solving

  • UnderstandsVanderbilt Campus Dining Meal Plans and has the ability to explain theguidelines of the plan to customers

Safety and Sanitation:

  • Maintainsquality, safety and sanitary standards of State and City Health Departments andVanderbilt Campus Dining codes

  • Maintainsclean and orderly work area and complete other general cleaning duties

  • Reportsto management any safety hazards and equipment in need of repair

Profileof an Ideal Candidate

  • Ability to read Vanderbilt Campus Diningdocuments with or without accommodations

  • Basic recipe preparation and/or execution toinclude basic culinary language, techniques and ingredient identification

  • Cover, date and correctlystore all food items as per safe food-handling procedures

  • Basicknife skills

  • Abilityto lift at least 50 lbs. regularly

  • Abilityto bend, stoop and kneel
