Vanderbilt University has an exciting opportunity for a Carpenter to join the Zone Maintenance Team in Plant Operations and Facilities Management. The Carpenter team is responsible for the all the carpenter needs though out the campus.

About the Work Unit:

Plant Operations provides facilities support for all construction, renovation, and routine maintenance of University Central space and facilities; housekeeping services for approximately 5.8 million square feet of academic, administrative, residential, and recreational space; grounds care for 330 acres that are a registered arboretum; turf care for athletic fields; and utilities for the University Central and the Medical Center.

Facilities annual budget exceeds $100 million in operating expenses and includes over 400 employees. Facilities manages major capital project expenditures totaling $125 million annually and facility renewal, replacement and large maintenance project expenditures totaling $20 million annually.

WORKING HOURS: 7:30 am to 4:00 p.m. – Monday – Friday

Must be available to work additional hours as required including evening hours.

Key Functions and Expected Performance:

  • Replace Ceiling Tile

  • Utilize all wood working equipment

  • Cut/hang/mud dry wall

  • Repair/replace carpet and/or carpet squares

  • Construction of wooden steps

  • Minor furniture repairs in dorms and academic buildings

  • Assemble and place trash cans and park benches

  • Lay ceramic wall tile and grout

  • Install cove base

  • Repair/replace entry systems, including doors

  • Hand pictures/bulletin/dry erase/chalk boards

  • Patch holes and nail holes

  • Clean roof drains/gutters

  • Repair track on sliding doors

  • Install and replace brackets for shelving on walls

  • Install/replace door stops

  • Install/replace door sweeps

  • Assist moving crew with furniture moving

  • Assist moving crew with stage setup

  • Change filter in dorm rooms unit

  • Assist Plumbers with caulking sinks and counters in bathrooms

  • Assist Key Shop with door magnetic lock repair

  • Patch wooden windows assemblies

  • Assist with assembly of scaffolding/adjustable ladders to work on ceiling/light repair

  • Use man lift to make repairs

  • Adjust door closures

  • Adjust doors

  • Repair/Replace bathroom partitions

  • Repair/replace counter tops

  • Install keyboards & shelving

  • Assist with repairs for broken windows

  • Repair/replace turnstiles

  • Repair/replace window screen, window shades, venetian blinds

  • Repair/replace coat racks

  • Assist with minor sidewalk repair

  • Minor brick mortar repairs

  • Install laminate counter

  • Fabricate mail boxes

  • Fabricate and mount hand rails

  • Hang banners

  • Replace door hardware

  • Replace window hardware

  • Hang curtain rods

  • Repair window coverings

  • Repair/replace door thresholds

  • Repair/replace towel racks

  • Plastic repair

  • Stairway repair

  • Repair/replace door grill

  • Repair /replace spring closures for doors

  • Assist zone HAR mechanics, plumber, and electrician in the performance of their duties

  • Utilize work order system in all aspects including parts ordering, printing work orders, parts look-up

  • Set up and monitor personal work order query

  • Process daily work order time sheet

  • Operate vehicle/golf cart and perform operator level maintenance

  • Provide construction advise to management when needed – build or repair wooden furniture

  • Other duties related to classification

Education and Certifications:

  • High School Graduate or GED is required

  • Valid driver’s license

Experience and Skills:

  • 5 years of experience in a relevant position

  • Must be able to bend, stoop, reach or stand for extended periods of time.

  • Must be able to lift as at least 70 lbs

  • Able to work in various weather conditions

  • High work ethic
