The Career Coach provides comprehensive college-to-career coaching services to undergraduate students in one-on-one and group settings, and prepares and delivers workshops and programs across campus, with a focus on the needs of STEM majors. This position works closely with the Employer Relations team to assist in developing career paths and opportunities for STEM students.
The Career Center serves undergraduates enrolled full-time in all Vanderbilt schools and colleges, and we also provide career coaching to recent graduates (0-2 years out). We provide ongoing opportunities for students to learn about and explore professional opportunities, including career coaching, workshops, career panels, career fairs and field trips and more. We have many resources available to help students prepare for the world of work.
Duties and Responsibilities
Provide strategicindividual and group coaching as well as programs and workshops around careerassessment, career/major decision-making, career development, social media, andcollege-to-career transitions to Vanderbilt students who are pursuing a majorin science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM), utilizing latestresearch and coaching techniques from positive psychology and appreciativeinquiry.
Create webpage andhandout content, and other marketing/informational materials, learning aboutthe job market and the myriad opportunities available to STEM majors. Designcreative communication strategies (social media; email; etc.) to providetargeted communication to students and enhance student experience with theCareer Center.
Coordinate with theEmployer Relations team to identify potential employment opportunitiesincluding internships, summer jobs and post graduate opportunities.
Assist the ER team withevents, special programming, and employer information sessions.
Enhance Career Centerrelationships with faculty and administrators across campus by serving as a keyresource for career development and career planning programs, studentresidences, student organizations, Immersion, and other venues to expandstudents’ opportunities.
Maintain accuratestatistical reporting of activities through DoreWays and internal reportingsystems.Work with team to assessoutcome and value of programming and services.
Profile of an Ideal Candidate
Bachelor’s degree witha STEM focus is preferred and at least three (3) years of experience in careerservices or college student support services, including counseling, educationalprogramming, working with faculty and employers, and administrativeresponsibilities OR Master’s degree in counseling, higher education, or relatedfield, and at least 1 years of experience in career services, human resources,or an equivalent setting providing career placement activities.
Thorough knowledge ofall aspects of career decision-making and the job search process including:career assessment instruments, resume-writing, job search correspondence,interviewing (including behavioral interviews) and the summer job/internshipsearch.
Ability to conductindividual and small group coaching sessions using an active goals-orientedcareer coaching model such as appreciative inquiry or positive psychology.
Demonstrated success inprogram and/or project management for at least one year.
Knowledge of a broadrange of careers and employment opportunities for students interested in STEMfields.
Excellent verbal andwritten communication skills; strong interpersonal and presentation skills.
High creativity,innovativeness, and an entrepreneurial style.
Strong initiative, withthe ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Responsible andindependent nature: able to set goals and achieve them.
Ability to maintainconfidentiality of records and information.
Ability to work eveninghours and a flexible schedule as needed.
