Associate Director of Development, Planned Giving (Job Number: 1900946)


The Department of Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) assists Vanderbilt University in securing the resources, both human and financial, that are required to achieve its mission and goals. The Department is responsible for the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of individuals and organizations whose charitable objectives are consistent with those of Vanderbilt University’s teaching and research programs.

The Associate Director of Planned Giving works with alumni and university friends in an assigned geographic area to solicit both outright and estate gifts that supports Vanderbilt’s mission in accordance with Development and Alumni Relation’s (DAR) Planned Giving Office policies and procedures.

Key Functionsand Expected Performance:

  • Interact directlywith donors to address all aspects of the personal, financial, legal and taxconsequences of charitable giving, especially life income gifts and bequests,including preparation of letter proposals, personalized calculations and use ofprinted materials.

  • Consult with andprovide support to VU staff, including Development and Alumni Relations (DAR)executives and administrators, Development Officers, academic deans andothers.

  • Respond in timelyfashion to inquiries from the staff and donors relating to Planned Gifts byproviding useful information, calculations and options for planned gifts.

  • Concentrate onincreasing the number of gifts being finalized each year by the Planned GivingOffice by identifying and cultivating new prospects, including acting ascontact person between Planned Giving and donor research department.

  • Manage a portfolioof approximately 70-75 major gift prospects and donors.

  • Perform variousadministrative tasks related to the solicitation and administration of gifts toVU, including transmitting necessary documentation and information to VU’soffice of Investment, General Counsel or others, as necessary.

  • This position willinteract with a wide variety of University leaders, faculty, staff, andconstituents, including the Board of Trust;

  • Further enhancementof the University’s marketing and publicity efforts related to planned giving.

  • Work with theExecutive Director to establish fundraising goals and strategies for annual andcomprehensive campaigns.

  • Continuously compile, review, and analyzeproject outcomes against established goals, objectives, and timelines;

  • Recommend process improvement for program andservices;

  • Use appropriate resources to effectively andefficiently resolve problems.

  • Uphold departmental and institutional policiesregarding confidential information.

  • Work cooperatively with DAR colleagues anddevelop strong working relationships with other University offices.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.


This position has no direct management duties. This position reports administratively and functionally to the Senior Director of Planned Giving.

Education andCertifications

  • A bachelor’s degree, or the equivalent, isrequired

  • Relevant Master’s degree is preferred with knowledge of estateplanning, federal and state tax law as it impacts charitable giving

Experienceand Skills

  • One year of relevantexperience is required

  • Preference willbe given to candidates with at least 3 years within a higher education/researchinstitution.

  • Demonstratedsuccess in managing a portfolio of prospects and securing six figure gifts fromindividuals.

  • Superiororganizational skills, verbal and written communication skills, and the abilityto articulate the needs, interests, and accomplishments of VanderbiltUniversity

  • Candidate mustalso have the capacity to perform in an intellectually rigorous and complexacademic environment. The ability toapply sound judgment skills in all situations, especially related tomanagement, donor issues, and budget, is required.

  • A detailed working knowledge of VanderbiltUniversity is preferred.

  • Meticulousattention to detail is a must.

  • Travel, alongwith occasional evening and weekend work, is required.
