The Admissions Office team of six professionals and three support staff is responsible for student recruitment, admissions, and scholarships for Vanderbilt’s highly ranked J.D. program and its LL.M. program for foreign-trained attorneys. As part of the J.D. application process, our unique Admission Interview Program includes more than 800 VLS alumni conducting in-person interviews in 46 states, Washington, DC, and 12 foreign locations.

The Admissions Office serves prospective students, the Law School, and the legal profession through its commitment to high standards of professional conduct and ethical behavior; accuracy and candor in providing information to prospective students; adherence to principles of equity and inclusion; respect for confidentiality; and excellent customer service.

The Associate Director recruits JD and LLM students to the law school; reviews and recommends action on JD and LLM applications; plans and assists with JD and LLM admissions and international student services.

Duties and responsibilities

Student recruitment (50%)

  • Counselprospective JD and LLM students and admitted applicants in person, by phone,and in writing

  • Workclosely with admitted applicants providing information about the law school andNashville and arranging contacts with current students, faculty, or campus orlocal organizations of interest

  • Representthe law school at JD and LLM recruiting events across the nation and abroad –requires extensive travel.

  • Givetours of the law school to prospective students and other visitors

  • Hostalumni interview and recruiting events in various locations

  • Assistin planning and participate in on-campus Admitted Students Programs

  • Identify and select outside web vendors asneeded to support web communications initiatives for which university servicesare not available.

Student selection (20%)

  • ReviewJD (first-year and transfer) and LLM applications, provide comments,and recommend action

  • Conductapplicant interviews and prepare interview reports for applicants’ files

  • Managecontact and visits from JD wait-list candidates, tracking frequency ofcontacts, level of interest, and application updates, identifying and notinginformation of potential importance to final decisions on wait listapplications

  • Counselwait list applicants on the wait list process, in person, by phone, and inwriting

  • Recommendaction on wait-list applications

International student services (20%)

  • Act as international student and alumni liaison (JDand LLM), assisting entering international students with arrangements formoving to Nashville and participating in their orientation to VLS inconsultation with the Director of the LL.M. Program

  • Advise international students on their academicprograms and coordinate academic and student services in consultation with theDirector of the LL.M. Program and the Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs

  • Coordinate and develop programs and servicesdirected to LLM students in consultation with the Director of the LL.M. Programand with the Dean of Student Affairs Office concerning relevant studentorganizations and activities and the Dean of Alumni and Development Officeconcerning relevant alumni events and services

  • Coordinate alumni involvement in recruiting new LLMstudents in consultation with the Director of the LL.M. Program

  • Periodically review and summarize peer schools’practices and recommend improvements to the LLM program Director and Dean ofAdmissions

Office responsibilities (10%)

  • Compile information for various publications andsurveys such as LSAC and Princeton Review

  • Collect data from application materials for anannual detailed profile of the entering JD class

  • Collaborate as appropriate with Associate Director,Admissions Interview Program, on administration of program utilizing more than800 VLS alumni volunteers to interview nearly 1500 law school applicantsannually

Supervisory Relationships :

This position does not have supervisory responsibility and reports administratively and functionally to the Assistant Dean of Admissions, Vanderbilt Law School.

Profile of an Ideal Candidate

  • A Bachelor’s Degree is necessary , however, the most competitive candidates are likely tohold an advanced degree in Education, a J.D., or an international LL.M

  • 1- 3 years of comparable experience in admissions or student services in highereducation setting is necessary .

  • Weencourage applications from individuals who have lived or worked abroad andthose who are fluent in languages other than English.

  • This position will require travel, up to 4 weeks per year.
