The Assistant Site Director will be an experienced and knowledgeable ECE administrator committed to deliver high quality early childhood care education. The Assistant Site Director will be confident in their knowledge of State of Tennessee DHS licensing regulation, capable to support the administration of a 3-Star licensed child care center, and possessing the attitudes, dispositions and skills necessary to partner with parents and lead teaching teams to deliver a play-based curriculum grounded in social-constructivist pedagogy.

VCFC programs reflect the research-based understanding that play is essential to children’s health and well-being, and foundational to children’s learning. VCFC supports children in creating their own knowledge through hands-on experiences and child-initiated play. Teachers provide encouragement, nurture, protection, security, stimulation, and supervision to children.

The Child & Family Center offers quality early childhood education and cares for the children of Vanderbilt Faculty, staff, and students. The program serves children age infants (6 weeks) to five years old.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Advocatesfor the vision that every child is an Artist and Scientist, born capableand competent to explore their curiosity and to formulate and expresstheir big ideas

  • Facilitates adevelopmentally appropriate learning environment to promote discovery,exploration, health, and safety for all children in all domains, modelingproper use of tools and scaffolding instruction to support amulti-disciplinary approach to inquiry-based learning

  • Promotescollaboration among teachers, while providing support to staff andchildren with the activities, investigations, and projects that meetchildren’s individual needs and reflect diverse perspectives and interests

  • Supportive ofchildren’s feelings, perceptions, behaviors, and interactions, and seeksto understand them

  • Ensure curriculumactivities, and the design of the learning environment reflects theintegration of the five domains: Approaches to Learning; Social-EmotionalDevelopment; Physical Development and Health; Language, Literacy, andCommunication; and Mathematics and Science

  • Design and organizea happy learning environment, and according to VCFC policies andprocedures for a safe and orderly classroom environment which contributesto the physical, emotional, social, and cognitive growth of children

  • Talks, sings,reads, and facilitates discussions with children throughout the day toenhance their language development and early literacy. (Multiple languagesencouraged.)

  • Supervision ofchildren at all times: implements VCFC strategies for head counts andattendance

  • Supports VCFCteachers to maintain a clean, safe, orderly classroom environment whichcontributes to the physical, emotional, social, and cognitive growth ofchildren

  • Must retaincompliance with DHS licensing standards, including submitting neededreports

Profile ofan Ideal Candidate:

  • A Master’s Degree in ChildDevelopment from an accredited institution of higher education ispreferred, but a Bachelor's Degree is required..

  • Possession of or ability tobecome infant-child first aid/CPR certified is necessary.

  • At least 4 years ofrelevant experience caring for and teaching young children ages 0-5 yearsin a licensed child care center is necessary.

  • Knowledge of blood-borne pathogens, and ability to implementsafety procedures (including for diapering/toileting, nutrition, FirstAid) is necessary.

  • Strong understanding that children’s learning and developmentoccurs in the context of meaningful relationships, builds on children’sstrengths, incorporates multiple approaches to learning, and reflects thecultural and linguistic experiences of the children is necessary.

  • Ability to lift and carry 40 pounds is necessary.

  • Ability to reach, run, sit, stand, squat, stoop and walk isnecessary.

  • Fluent in multiple languages is preferred.

  • Experience coaching and supervising ECE teachers is preferred.

  • Experience with licensed child care site supervision is preferred.

  • Knowledge of social-constructivist systems thinking theories ispreferred.
