Vanderbilt University Assistant Director of Student Organizations, Leadership & Service in Nashville, Tennessee
The Assistant Director of Student Organizations, Leadership and Service for the Dean of Students division at Vanderbilt University is responsible for assisting with co-curricular learning and development through intentional student engagement while staying abreast of best practices in higher education and utilizing a third party administrative platform (Anchor Link). The Assistant Director assists the Director with creating and hosting numerous trainings for student leaders and coaches as well as assisting with numerous high profile student organizations (Vanderbilt Student Government, Student Services Fee Committee, Experience Vanderbilt). The Assistant Director is also responsible for the development and implementation of a comprehensive strategic plan that supports the vision for student leadership and coaching in student affairs. The Assistant Director implements and assesses numerous leadership programs throughout the year, including one-time workshops, cohort-based programs, and leadership coaching using their experience with Clifton Strengths
The Office of Student Organizations, Leadership and Service (SOLS) strives to encourage co-curricular learning and development through intentional student engagement. SOLS connects the campus community by highlighting opportunities for meaningful involvement and helping students engage with tools to help manage and track the co-curricular student experience. We support the mission-driven work of student organizations and seek to equip student leaders with vital skills and resources in order to make their organizations more effective, inclusive, impactful, and sustainable. Staff in the office oversee the registration process for Vanderbilt’s 500+ registered student organizations and provide training and coaching to student leaders.
The office also engages members of the Vanderbilt community in creating and sustaining a culture of lifelong leadership development, training, and education. Duties and Responsibilities
Serve as a resource for student organizations, including the following services:
Offering leadership workshops
Planning and coordinating various programs to encourage student organization participation at Dean of Students and University events
Upon request, provide CliftonStrengths training to student organization leaders involved in registered student organizations
Track student involvement in student organizations and programs through active use of Anchor Link.
Manage Vanderbilt Student Government through Anchor Link
Assist student organizations with membership recruitment, operations, internal elections, event promotion, service-hours tracking, attendance tracking, etc.
Coach student organizations, including Vanderbilt Student Government
Serve as the primary coach for Vanderbilt Student Government
Work closely with the Student Body President, Vice President, and full executive board to provide advice on all aspects of the organization
Attend Senate meetings and provide advice, as needed
Provides leadership seminars, trainings, and workshops for VSG such as Presidents’ Roundtable and VSG Leadership Retreat
Support Experience Vanderbilt, a fund that has been established to support students who are eligible for financial aid with expenses associated with extracurricular and co-curricular experiences
Assist with the coordination of the Student Services Fee allocation process, which includes approximately $2,000,000 distributed to student organizations
Assist with monitoring and management of the Student Organization online Marketplace
Collaborate with the Director in the review, development, and implementation of a comprehensive strategic plan for student leadership development that supports the missions of the Dean of Students Office and Vanderbilt University
Serve as a liaison from the Dean of Students Office to schools and departments, coordinating and facilitating Strengths Leadership training and other leadership programs for students across the university
Plan and facilitate numerous leadership programs throughout the year for undergraduate and graduate/professional students, including one-time workshops and cohort based programs
Assist with developing a comprehensive training program for student organization leaders and coaches that covers various topics including but not limited to administrative processes, finances, social justice, service learning, diversity and inclusion.
Assist with developing a comprehensive student organization coach training program that includes onboarding of new coaches and continuing education throughout the year.
Assist with designing and implementing an innovative individual coaching program that allows for students to be coached by trained faculty and staff in a 1:1 setting throughout the year
Work collaboratively with all Dean of Students departments to ensure our desired leadership philosophy is used effectively in training and development of students
Support the Vanderbilt Awards for Leadership Excellence, Vanderbilt’s premier student leadership recognition ceremony
Compile, analyze, and use program data to enable a culture of data driven decision making in all areas of the office
Supervise three professional staff and up to 2 graduate assistants providing clear performance expectations, effective and on-going feedback, regular and annual evaluations, and professional development opportunities
Assist with financial oversight for the office, including full responsibility for the preparation and management of relevant budgets
Represent the Office of the Dean of Students, and Vanderbilt University on university, community, and national committees and boards
Work collaboratively with DOS partners to infuse leadership programming throughout their operation
Serve on divisional committees and working groups to enrich the experience and resources available to staff across the division.
Participate in division wide events as needed (Move-In Day, Rites of Spring, Diverse ‘Dores Day, MLK Day, etc.) to support colleagues and ensure these events run smoothly.
Maintain an understanding of institutional and departmental financial policies related to areas such as travel, procurement, expense, and time reporting to ensure compliance and proper stewardship of university resources.
Demonstrate a willingness to support colleagues across the division in order to encourage the implementation or fulfillment of divisional goals and strategic priorities.
Performs other work related duties as assigned
This position does have supervisory responsibility for five program coordinators and a graduate assistant; this position reports administratively and functionally to the Director of Student Organizations, Leadership and Service.
Bachelor’s degree is necessary.
Master’s degree is preferred.
At least two years of directly related experience is necessary.
At least four years of directly related experience is preferred.
Clifton Strengths Certification is preferred.
Knowledge of university administration operations is preferred.
Experience in planning and managing budgets is preferred.
Eagerness to build relationships with students, faculty and staff is necessary.
Excellent oral and written communication skills are necessary.
Ability to handle multiple tasks/events at once is necessary.
Strong organizational and managerial skill set is necessary.
Involved in community, regional and national professional organizations is preferred.
Familiarity with online student engagement platforms is preferred.
Experience in developing, implementing, and leading training programs and/or serving as a project team leader in workplace development is preferred.
Knowledge of leadership development practices and program evaluation is preferred.
Knowledge of student learning and development concepts/theory is preferred.
Excellent written communications skills and strong interpersonal skills are necessary.
Organizational skills and the ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks are necessary.
Supervisory skills are preferred
