The Accountant position supports the accounting operations of Vanderbilt University by partnering with the Assistant Controller to ensure the General Ledger is up-to-date with the most accurate information, analyzes and reviews financial data, and prepares reports for both internal and external purposes. The Accountant must display a comprehensive understanding of Vanderbilt’s mission and vision, and strive to meet Finance departmental goals by demonstrating an understanding of academic accounting in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and Vanderbilt University policies and procedures.
As a member of the Accounting Team, the Accountant facilitates and maintains strong, collaborative relationships with Vanderbilt’s faculty, and students and identifies additional ways to be of service, ensuring customer satisfaction.
The Accounting Team serves as the single point of contact for all centralized accounting activities at the university. They are responsible for maintaining the general ledger and chart of accounts. The goal of this team is to maintain internal controls that ensure financial transactions are accurately processed and proper records are maintained for the university.
Duties and responsibilities
Reviewroutine transactions for proper chart of accounts coding.
Availableto provide customer service to university departments. Responsibilities includeworking to resolve various issues such as recording transactions, reconcilingaccounts and communicating process and policy changes.
Preparemonthly general ledger account reconciliations timely and elevate issues to theAssistant Controller.
Assistwith developing and documenting business processes and accounting policies tomaintain and strengthen internal controls.
Evaluateand recommend improvements in accounting system procedures to ensure accurateapplication of accounting principles.
Participateregularly in process improvement initiatives under indirect supervision andoversight.
Applycritical thinking to financial and other information presented within the scopeof responsibilities, research issues/questions related to financial data, andcommunicate information to management in a timely and effective manner.
Managea high volume workload based on weekly, monthly or quarterly deadlines.
Demonstrateknowledge of accounting principles with strong analytical and accounting skillsand familiarity with GAAP, as well as an ability to grasp university policiesand procedures.
Accountingsoftware skills and ability to create and analyze financial reports. Proficientwith Microsoft Office Suite programs.
Abilityto work collaboratively with all levels of staff and departments to maximizeperformance, creativity, problem solving, and results.
Abilityto exercise sound judgment and effectively handle multiple tasks simultaneouslyin a deadline driven environment.
Strongverbal, written communication and interpersonal skills.
Provenability to excel in fast-paced, changing, and challenging environments.
Profile ofan Ideal Candidate
ABachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education isnecessary.
ABachelor’s degree with an emphasis in accounting or finance is preferred.
2+ years of accounting experienceis necessary.
Skill in Excel and Word applications isnecessary.
Time management skills and the ability to work well in a teamenvironment is necessary.
Knowledge of accounting principles and generalledger is necessary.
Proven detail-oriented workstyle in collaboration with effective written and verbal communicationskills is preferred.
Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with arange of people, understanding their needs and goals is preferred.
Ability to work co-operatively with others as part of a team, as opposedto working separately or competitively, is preferred.
